At four years old, Ella was diagnosed with stage 1 Ewing sarcoma, a type of cancer that grows in the bones or in the surrounding tissue. After enduring 14 rounds of chemotherapy at CHOC, she earned a nickname for her courage and optimism — Brave Boyle. She went through a 15-hour surgery to remove her fibula and place it in her arm. More surgeries followed, and Brave Boyle fought aggressively. She would learn to walk seven times over the course of her recovery, initially crumbling after five steps but eventually walking the halls of CHOC’s oncology unit. The road back to normalcy was an arduous one, but Ella is happy and healthy today.
