Kate Bunce, Melody/Musica, 1895-1897

Designs featuring the painting Melody (1895-1897), or Musica, by Kate Bunce. The picture shows a young woman playing a lute. The model may have been the artist's sister Myra. The musician is facing an open window, visible in the mirror behind her. You can also see a crucifix and stained glass image of the Virgin, suggesting that the young woman is performing inside a small chapel. On her left side is an ornate vase, overflowing with apple blossoms. The painting has a solemn atmosphere, but is also very decorative, full of luxurious colors, details and textures. Kate Elizabeth Bunce (1856 – 1927) was an English painter and poet associated with the Arts and Crafts movement.
