Cist., venerated as Saint Bernard, was an abbot, mystic, co-founder of the Knights Templar, a major leader in the reformation of the Benedictine Order. He was a powerful preacher and is to have performed miracles, especially in healing the sick. His reputation attracted great crowds of pilgrims to Clairvaux which soon became the most important of the Cistercian monasteries. Their aim was to regenerate the purity of the early Renaissance.
