The Bears of Brooks Falls

Alaskan Brown Bears go to Brooks falls every summer for a months-long salmon buffet, all captured by webcams that draw more viewers every year. Those of us who watch the cams get to know the character, habits, and disposition of many of the individual bears. We know that 856 is a dominant grouch who competes for the Top Spot with 747, the more benevolent dictator. We know that 128 Grazer will take on either of them if they so much as side-eye one of her cubs. We know that Otis is the elder statesman of the Falls and possibly the most popular bear on earth. Cam watchers admire how he has adapted to old age to continue making a living in a patient, steady way. I took hundreds of photos while I was there. And I keep coming back to the ones that show the bears' unique qualities and stir feelings in me, whether that's laughter, admiration, or just a smile. Then I put them on designs.
