Uemura Shoen Composition of a poem 1942
Designs inspired by a delicately beautiful artwork by Japanese artist Uemura Shōen (1875–1949).
The painting, titled Composition of a poem (1942), shows a beautiful woman, wearing kimono and a set of hairpins. She's depicted in a traditional Japanese style. Her head is turned sideways, but her gaze seems unfocused and thoughtful. You can easily imagine that she's looking for inspiration for a new poem. In her hands she's holding a pen and a piece of paper.
Some of the designs focus on the subject of the painting: a thoughtful woman with a pen and a piece of paper. Perhaps she's writing a letter (the stationery papers)? Perhaps she's writing a love poem for Valentine's Day, or a rhymed verse for an upcoming birthday (the greeting card)?
The purpose of the other designs (as of now, the postcard and the poster) is just to make available an almost contemporary, but really outstanding example of the Japanese bijin-ga tradition.
