Of all the wonderful colors you see at Christmas, green, red and blue are (along with white, gold and silver) the most prominent. This is not by accident. Green comes from the evergreens that have, historically, been used as decoration . . . including (but not limited to) the pine, spruce and fir trees and mistletoe. This greenery also reminded everyone that winter would not last forever and spring would, eventually, take its place. Green is a color of life and growth -- one of the reasons it is also a favored color in the printing of money. Red is also associated with life and love and passion. Over the holidays, it is a favored color because of holly berries and apples that were also used to decorate holiday trees long ago. Christians also relate the color to the blood of Jesus Christ when He was crucified which seems, strangely, both inappropriate and appropriate as Christmas is a celebration of the BIRTH of Christ. The use of blue in holiday decor is also multifaceted. In ancient times, blue dye was restricted to royalty and only the very wealthy as it was even more expensive than gold itself. In addition to its association with heaven and the sky, blue is often used to clothe the Virgin Mary in her various representations. Initially, this was so her importance would immediately, visually, be apparent. These colors are used in this design on one, each, of the three Christmas ornaments. The number three is, of course, also significant, representing the Trinity: God the Father; Jesus Christ the Son; and the Holy Spirit. The trio of colors has also been "harvested" and striped in the "Merry Christmas" graphic of this design.
