Saint Vincent of Saragossa Deacon and Martyr Sokken
A solemn and historically grounded depiction of Saint Vincent of Saragossa, one of the most revered martyrs of the early Church. According to authoritative sources, Vincent was born in Huesca in the 3rd century and served as a deacon of the Church of Saragossa, assisting Bishop Valerius in preaching and charitable works.
During the Diocletian persecution, Vincent and his bishop were arrested and brought before the Roman governor Dacian. While Valerius was exiled due to age and frailty, Vincent—young, eloquent, and steadfast—was subjected to brutal tortures for refusing to renounce Christ. He died as a martyr in Valencia around 304 AD, becoming the Protomartyr of Spain and one of the most celebrated saints of the Iberian Peninsula.
Saint Vincent is traditionally depicted wearing a deacon’s dalmatic, often accompanied by symbols such as a raven, a gridiron, or a ship, recalling episodes from his passion and the miraculous protection of his relics. He is the patron saint of Lisbon, Valencia, Algarve, Vicenza, and of vintners and wine‑makers.
Ideal for sacred art prints, educational materials, devotional designs, and historical Christian iconography.
